Patricia Smith, a National Book Award finalist and winner of four National Poetry Slam titles, reads from her works Feb. 27
As part of its Wordsmiths Reading Series, Bucks County Community College presents nationally acclaimed poet Patricia Smith Friday, February 27. The free event takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the Orangery building on the campus at 275 Swamp Rd., Newtown.
Recognized as one of the world’s most formidable performers, Smith has read her work at venues round the world and in the U.S., including Carnegie Hall. She is a four-time national individual champion of the wildly popular Poetry Slam, the most successful competitor in slam history. Smith was featured in the film “Slamnation” and appeared on the award-winning HBO series “Def Poetry Jam.”
Smith is a finalist for the 2008 National Book Award for her fifth book of poetry, Blood Dazzler, which chronicles the human, physical and emotional toll exacted by Hurricane Katrina. She’s also the author of Teahouse of the Almighty, which won four awards; Close to Death; Big Towns, Big Talk; and Life According to Motown. Her poems have appeared in Poetry, Paris Review, Harvard Divinity Bulletin, and other journals, and in many anthologies. Her poem “The Way Pilots Walk” received a Pushcart Prize, and is featured in Pushcart Prize XXXII: Best of the Small Presses.
Bucks County poet Camille Norvaisas, a finalist in the Bucks County Poet Laureate competition, will join Smith at the reading. The event concludes the college’s celebration of Black History Month.
