New York Trip for Cinema/Video and anyone else interested

The Paley Center for Media (aka Museum of Television and Radio). We will need to make reservations by this weekend. The cost would be $3/person.

Museum of Modern Art. cost is $10/person for group reservation.

NBC Studio tour. If we get enough people, we could take a group tour. The cost would be $16.25/person.

The TLTR in conjunction with Learning Resources is pleased to announce the Bucks Global Video Mash-Up Contest!

The goals of this contest, intended for BCCC students, are to:
Promote creativity and social consciousness through a video project.
Develop a multimedia skill set and knowledge base among students, faculty and staff.
Raise awareness of the 21st skills that students need.
Create awareness of multimedia projects as vehicle for learning.
Create a rubric for assessing video projects.
Create awareness of alternative assignments for faculty to assess student ability and knowledge.
First, second and third prizes will be awarded for the winning entries. A panel of faculty and staff will be evaulating the videos based on a criteria that will include:

Creative and innovative use of existing content for a derivative work.
Ability to engage a variety of audiences regarding a global issue.
Ability to effectively convey the purpose of the proposed theme through the use a digital medium.
Entries are due in the Learning Resources Department no later than May 1, 2009 at 4:00 PM

Patricia Smith, a National Book Award finalist and winner of four National Poetry Slam titles, reads from her works Feb. 27


As part of its Wordsmiths Reading Series, Bucks County Community College presents nationally acclaimed poet Patricia Smith Friday, February 27. The free event takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the Orangery building on the campus at 275 Swamp Rd., Newtown.

Recognized as one of the world’s most formidable performers, Smith has read her work at venues round the world and in the U.S., including Carnegie Hall. She is a four-time national individual champion of the wildly popular Poetry Slam, the most successful competitor in slam history. Smith was featured in the film “Slamnation” and appeared on the award-winning HBO series “Def Poetry Jam.”

Smith is a finalist for the 2008 National Book Award for her fifth book of poetry, Blood Dazzler, which chronicles the human, physical and emotional toll exacted by Hurricane Katrina. She’s also the author of Teahouse of the Almighty, which won four awards; Close to Death; Big Towns, Big Talk; and Life According to Motown. Her poems have appeared in Poetry, Paris Review, Harvard Divinity Bulletin, and other journals, and in many anthologies. Her poem “The Way Pilots Walk” received a Pushcart Prize, and is featured in Pushcart Prize XXXII: Best of the Small Presses.

Bucks County poet Camille Norvaisas, a finalist in the Bucks County Poet Laureate competition, will join Smith at the reading. The event concludes the college’s celebration of Black History Month.

Scholarship Workshops for Students

The BCCC Foundation is holding multiple workshops for students this week entitled "Submitting a Winning Scholarship Application".

We've received a great response, but I still have space available in Wednesday's 3:30 workshop here in Newtown, and a few spots at the Upper Bucks workshop on Thursday at 12:30. Registration is required, so please have interested students contact me directly at 215-968-8417.

If they can't make one of those times, I'd be happy to set up an individual appointment.

Open Lab Times

The computer labs are open on the following schedule for student use. If for some reason a lab assistant is not available and the lab is closed
CONTACT THE LIBRARY REFERENCE DESK, 215-968-8013, IF L120 IS NOT OPEN ON SATURDAY OR SUNDAY DURING THE HOURS POSTED. If the lab assistant is not available, the reference librarian will be notified and the lab will be opened.

The labs are not open on Sunday until April. The College is officially closed in an effort to conserve energy.

Free Computer Workshops for Students

 The Technology Learning Center is again offering free 1-hour workshops for students. For the month of February we will be featuring Microsoft Word 2007 and Microsoft PowerPoint 2007. The workshops are free. See the TLC on the third floor of the Library for further information. 

Art Opening: Friday Feb. 20th from 5-7 p.m.; Hicks Art Center

"Self-Portrait Busts and Kinetic Figurative Steel Sculpture" Student works from the Fall 2008 3D Modeling and Materials class will be on exhibit in the Hicks Art Center Atrium Gallery from 2/16/09 to 2/26/09.  BC3D Sculpture Club is sponsoring an opening for this show which will take place Friday, Feb. 20 from 5-7 pm, food and beverages will be served.

Music as Muse

Department of the Arts New York Trip

Tickets for the Department of the Arts New York trip are on sale in the Department Office.  The sooner you buy your ticket the more you save.  The trip is scheduled for Friday March 27th.  It is a great day, the bus leaves BCCC at 8:00 and returns in the evening.  The bus stops at the Met and Chelsea.  Faculty and students enjoy this trip every semester.  Contact the Department office to get your ticket.

I will try and post important information for you on this site.  We have tried a number of different ways to get information to Arts students with different levels of success.   This blog is another path for information sharing.  We will set the home page in L120 and L107 to open to this blog.  When you use the internet please scan the page for important messages and information.  If you would like to add to the conversation please contact me and I will post your message.
